What’s New in 2018 for IPC Training & Certification
The IP C training & certification team is dedicated to continually improving the certification process and
training programs.
In 2018, we are planning to make significant upgrades to the certification portal based on feedback from

of thes e changes will include the use of IPC EDGE, our online education portal. Expect to see these chang

CIT/CI S is applying for certification. The modules must be completed before a certification is issued.
Why i s IPC making these changes?
• Improves the integrity of the certification program
• Ensures legal defensibility of IPC certifications
• IPC certifying body content is covered by IPC, freeing up classroom time
• Allows instructors to focus more time on the technical content of the standards
• Builds foundational knowledge of IPC standards globally
• Delivers consistent knowledge on IPC Policy and Procedures globally
What can I expect?
The combination of the new IPC Policy and Essentials modules and the online exam for a specific
certification program will have a fee of $65/person. The IPC nonmember fee will be $85/person. - 1 retest of an individual module included.
• The same combination of modules mentioned above and the print test exam will have a fee of
$80/person. The IPC non-member fee will be $100/person. - 1 retest of an individual module included.

-Additional retests require a new class registration and fee at the level of the initial test.
• Upgrades and testing of the system are expected to be completed by second quarter 2018
• IPC Policy and Essentials Modules expected to be released by second quarter 2018
The IPC certification program is important to you our customers and to IPC as a certification body. We
look forward to providing you the best certification programs in the electronics industry.

Dear Certification Exam Credit User

IPC is continually evaluating the products that we deliver to you our customers and would like to thank you for your continued support of IPC Certification and Training.

Over the past few months IPC created three exam credit products in our online store which allowed you, the user, to purchase exam credits through the IPC Online Store. These products consisted of purchasing exam credits in increments of $50, $35 and $1. Unfortunately, these three increment levels caused confusion with users and raised questions about the three levels. Many users mistakenly interpreted the $50 and $35 levels as an single exam unit or single exam credit. These were never intended to be a, “Seat”, “Exam”, or “Unit” purchase. These levels were intended to be used for the convenience of the customer in adding funds to an online certification account.

To alleviate the confusion, IPC will no longer offer three levels for purchasing exam credits.

IPC will only offer the $1 increment level product to purchase exam credits.

Exam credits will be decremented based on the pricing structure that exists when a class is scheduled.

Those of you who currently have purchase orders in the system which have not been processed will receive your exam credits using the $1 level product. Your exam credit value amount will not change. It will be equal to the original amount you requested. IPC will be using the $1 incremental level to process your order.

IPC would like to thank you for using the new method to purchase exam credits in the IPC online store. We apologize for the confusion created by the multiple exam credit level products. We believe by providing one method to purchase exam credits will make it simple and easy to use.

Should you have any questions please contact customerservice@ipc.org.

Dear Colleague:

As valued members of the IPC Training and Certification community, we are reaching out to keep you informed on the key initiatives for 2018. As we have mentioned in the past, IPC wants to keep you informed of the progress we are making with EDGE 2.0 and certification enhancements.

We continue to beta test the enhancements to the system and have just completed 3 webinars explaining EDGE 2.0. One of the many questions we received from the webinars was, when is the system going to be launched?

Through the eight weeks of Beta testing we have received positive feedback from users, but we have also received several requests for enhancements and new features. We want to ensure that the system is performing well, and that we provide instructors and students with all the tools needed for a successful transition. Therefore, we expect to launch EDGE 2.0 with certification enhancements in mid to late Q2, 2018.

IPC will be sending out a specific launch date in the coming weeks. Please keep an eye out for the launch announcement from IPC.

Thank you once again for your continued support as we make improvements to the IPC certification systems. We recognize that the success and growth of our industry relies upon the partnership we have built and hope to expand this partnership with you in this coming year.

The IPC training & certification team is dedicated to continually improving the certification process and training programs.

In 2018, we are planning to make significant upgrades to the certification portal based on feedback from our users. IPC is working to simplify how the system is used and improve the certification process. Some of these changes will include the use of IPC EDGE, our online education portal. Expect to see these changes in the second quarter of 2018.

Regarding the CIT/CIS certification programs, IPC will introduce new IPC Policy and Essentials Modules. The modules are new requirements for both new and recertifying CIT/CIS covering all certification programs. The modules will be required to be taken at time of CIT/CIS recertification and when new CIT/CIS are applying for certification.

Why is IPC making these changes?

  • Improves the integrity of the certification program
  • Ensures legal defensibility of IPC certifications
  • IPC certifying body content is covered by IPC freeing up classroom time
  • Allows instructors to focus more time on the technical content of the standards
  • Builds foundational knowledge of IPC standards globally
  • Delivers consistent knowledge on IPC Policy and Procedures globally

What can I expect?

  • The combination of the new IPC Policy and Essentials modules and the online exam to all modules for a specific certification program will have a fee of $65/person. The IPC nonmember fee will be $85/person.
  • The same combination of modules mentioned above and the print test exam will have a fee of $80/person. The IPC nonmember fee will be $100/person.
  • Upgrades and testing of the system are expected to be completed by second quarter 2018
  • IPC Policy and Essentials Modules expected to be released by second quarter 2018

The IPC certification program is important to you our customers and to IPC as a certification body. We look forward to providing you the best certification programs in the electronics industry.

As a user of the IPC Certification programs we would like to thank you for your continued support and we will keep you posted as we roll out these new requirements and updates. If you should have any additional questions please contact your training center or the certification help desk.

There were some comments that were in error or were misleading in the communication entitled "Explaining Why CQI Credits Expire" which was distributed November 7, 2017. I wish to reissue that statement below. Thank you for your understanding.

David W. Bergman
  Vice President Standards & Training

Background of CQI Exam Credits

Since launching CQI in 2015, IPC has allowed our customers to purchase exam credits and bank them for future use in the online certification portal (CQI). With those credits our customers can access testing for current and future classes.  The credits are available for your use for up to one year if purchased in 2017, and through year end 2017 if purchased in 2015 or 2016.

Why are CQI exam credits going to expire?

To efficiently and effectively manage, track and account for the credits, IPC is limiting the time for usage to one year, which classifies these credits as a current liability on IPC's books versus some as long-term liabilities if aged beyond one year. This one year window is a best practice in the training industry and we have adopted this best practice.

What changes were made?

Beginning in October 2016 we began communicating to our customers that this change would take place on January 1, 2017. The new policy stated that any CQI Exam credits purchased before January 2017 will expire December 31, 2017. All credits purchased on or after January 1, 2017 will expire one year from the month of purchase.

IPC updated our Terms of Service to provide a statement that unused CQI exam credits would expire 12 months after being applied to an account. In April 2017 we updated, in section 9, the Certification Policies and Procedures to state: Online Exam credits appear as invoices in the certification portal and will be available for one year after purchase date after which point they expire.

What has IPC done?

First, we've updated our terms and Policy and Procedures manual, to reflect this new policy change. Here are the highlights with respect to CQI exam credit expiration:

  1. All CQI exam credits, purchased on invoices, on or after January 1, 2017 will expire one year from date of purchase
  2.
  3. All CQI exam credits, purchased on invoices, before January 1, 2017 will be available for use until December 31, 2017, at which point they will expire
  4.
  5. Classes must be submitted before CQI exam credits expire
  6.
  7. There will be no refunds for CQI exam credits after they have expired

Additionally, you can check your exam credit expiration dates by accessing your invoices in the certification online portal (CQI), Also, all credit expiration email notifications from now on will link to our Certification Policy and Procedures manual (Section 9) about credit expiration so our policy is clear to all customers.

If you are not sure when your invoice will expire, follow the directions below to check the purchase date of your invoice.

  1. Logon to https://certification.ipc.org
  2.
  3. Click View/Edit Class
  4.
  5. Enter New Class
  6.
  7. Move down to the invoice field
  8.
  9. Click the arrow to see the invoices available

We are notifying all of our customers through the certification newsletter and on the front page of the certification online portal with more details about changes in our policy. Our goal is to provide a minimum of 90 days' notice for any expiring credits.

If you have CQI exam credits that are expiring and you would like to utilize them we encourage you to contact the Certification Helpdesk. We want to help with your certification and training needs and provide feedback on our programs and policies.

CQI Performance
In June 2017, IPC underwent a database migration. Though we tested the new database's interaction with the certification portal thoroughly, CQI has suffered some major performance challenges. We are diligently working on improving the performance of the site daily. We need your feedback so if you are experiencing slowness, please let us know by creating a help desk ticket. Please provide detailed information such as the page URL, and what you were doing when the page began to slow down.

Because of our database migration students are required to register themselves in the portal. The new registration form now only captures their name and email. This has impacted the way instructors enrolled students. Anyone who self-registered would result in an error when the instructor tried to enroll that student in the class. Therefore, we removed the registration link so that we can create a new registration form. This registration form is expected to be available in September.

Any student who registered themselves by only providing their email and name will need to be modified by the instructor upon new enrollment. If a student does have address and/or company information, the instructor will be prompted to enter the student details. We will demonstrate this at our next Hot Topics Session.

Certificates
Now that certificates can reliably be downloaded from the portal, certificates will no longer be presented to the students once they complete the exam. Since the instructor has the ultimate responsibility in determining if the student has met all the requirements needed for the certification, the certification will only be provided to the instructor. Display of the certificate at the successful completion of the modules will be deactivated Sept. 2017.

Exam Results
To maintain the integrity of IPC Certification, when online exams are completed, students will no longer be provided with all the questions and answers. By the end of Sept 2017, all exams will be updated to only display questions that were answered incorrectly and the incorrect answer that was chose.

Policies and Procedures
The Policies and Procedures document was updated in June. Anyone accessing the portal will need to agree to the new revision of this document.

Reminder: CQI Invoice Expiration
All exams purchased on an invoice on or before December 31, 2016 will expire December 31 2017.

All exams purchased on an invoice on or after January 1, 2017 will expire one year from the month of purchase. Exams credit will always expire the last day of the month regardless of the purchase day.

Tip:
It can be time consuming to enter grades then go back to the class details page to select the next student. You can save time if you right click on the student's name and select open in a new window. When you do this, the student's grade page will open in a different window, allowing you to enter the grade, save it, then close the window without leaving the full list of students. Note that after you enter grades, you will need to refresh the class list to see the grades and certificate numbers updated.

CERTIFICATION PORTAL PERFORMANCE

After completing a major system update IPC has discovered several performance issues with the certification portal. We have been working diligently to resolve the issues. Due to the unusually high volume of help desk tickets, we will respond to them within 48 hours. We appreciate your patience while we work to resolve all system performance issues.

We know many of you are experiencing a longer time for pages to load when you are using the portal. We realize the impact of this latency issue and we are currently working to find a way to resolve this performance issue. If you are experiencing other types of performance issues, please contact the IPC Certification Helpdesk immediately.

We apologize for the inconvenience these issues are causing and by working together we will resolve these performance issues quickly.

REMINDER: PASSWORDS WILL NO LONGER BE EMAILED
With the system upgrade, IPC is no longer able to email passwords for those who made the request of IPC in the past. This process is now automated so it is critical for everyone who is using the certification process has a valid email address

When a student is enrolled in a class, they will receive an enrollment that shows the email they have been registered with and a link that will direct them to the page below.

After entering their email address, they will be sent an email with information on how to reset their password. The email will contain a link that must be selected so that they can enter their password in a screen that appears as shown below.

After entering their password, they will select Change Password and this will finalize the process and they will be able to sign in to take their exam(s).

***IMPORTANT***The emails to reset passwords are generated through our website. Therefore, it is important to "whitelist" the emails so that they are not caught in the spam folder or blocked by your network. Please, inform your IT department to make sure that emails sent from webmaster@ipc.org are accepted.

If you train for multiple locations, and your student states that they didn't receive their enrollment email, you can inform them to work with their IT Dept.

As an alternative, you can also instruct student to

IPC has released IPC/WHMA-A-620C training and certification kit. This kit revision brings the training up to date with the new IPC/WHMA-A-620C standard. A brand new, optional but certified hands-on training module for CITs is available. The CIT can take an 8-hour course to be authorized to deliver the modular training to the CIS. More information about the course including the instructor support content can be found on the IPC website or this link:  IPCWHMA-A-620C Training

Policies and Procedures PowerPoint Slides:

The PowerPoint slides for the updated Policies and Procedure 5.1 are available for download. Please use the following for additional information.

Helpful Tips:

Certificate Name:

Review the certificate name before submitting your class. If you need to update the student's name, click edit for that student and update the name with the appropriate changes. Clicking on the student's certificate number will generate the new certificate for that student.

Class start and end dates
: When scheduling classes, do not schedule classes for the same course with the same start and end date. The start and end dates are used to differentiate the classes when signing in to take the online exam.

IPC Certification Updates

New Policy: CQI Invoice Expiration

In section 9 of the Certification Policies and Procedures,  invoices will now expire one year from date of purchase. This policy went into effect as of January 1, 2017. Any invoice purchased on or after this date will expire one year from the purchase date. There will be no refund if funds are not used by the expiration date.

All account holders will be notified prior to the expiration date.

Please note, if you have a class scheduled against an invoice that is due to expire, it must be submitted, prior to the invoice expiration date.

Exam Retests /Auto Submission of Classes.

Each student is allowed to take one free retest if the student does not successfully pass the first exam. If the student does not pass the retest exam, a new class will need to be scheduled and a $10 charge will be assessed for new each exam.

As noted in previous notifications new exam pricing structure became effective January 2017.  The purpose of the change is to allow our customers that choose optional modules to add them to their certification anytime within the two-year certification period for no additional cost. By implementing this change, it is no longer necessary for classes to be scheduled out more than two months at a time. If you have a class that will exceed the two-month time frame schedule you can now schedule the optional modules in a separate class. Please remember, classes should be submitted within one weeks of completion. Classes that are more than 30 days past the end date will be auto-submitted and all charges will be final. If circumstances prohibit you from submitting the class by the end date, edit the class and change the end date accordingly.

      IPC Essentials Language Translations

IPC will release IPC Essentials in 15 different languages.  The translated course will be available April 1, 2017.  All ESL (English as a second language) MITs and CITs will have until May 1, 2017 to complete the IPC Essentials course.

      New: Billing Category

Effective January 2017 the pricing structure was changed and we added an additional field titled Billing Category. The billing category has two options--Initial and Retest. TheInitial category is the default and should be used for the first attempt of taking a test. If a student fails the first test and the free retest, a new class must be scheduled. When setting up this new class the Retest category should be selected from the billing category.

      Online Print Waivers

Online print waivers are no longer required to be submitted. Thus, the waiver form has been removed from the certification portal.

While we encourage the use of online exams we recognize that this is not always possible and have decided to allow unlimited use of the online print. Making the exams available in a printable format involves additional development and maintenance for IPC, therefore, the fee for online print was increased to $50 per student.

IPC Essentials Update on Language Translations for ESL

As you are aware, on November 1, 2016, IPC Essentials, a required course for all MITs and CITs, was introduced in the IPC EDGE online education portal. In order for current MITs and CITs to maintain certification privileges and status, the IPC Essentials course is to be completed by February 1, 2017.  All future CIT's and MIT's are required to successfully complete the course during their certification training.

IPC has recognized the need to provide IPC Essentials in additional languages to accommodate those individuals who are unable to speak or read English.

We are currently working on translations including Spanish, German, French and Chinese. The IPC Essentials course in those four languages is expected to be available by April 1, 2017. You will be notified by email when the IPC Essentials translated versions are available.

Therefore, if you need to take the course in one of these four languages and have not previously taken your CIT exam in English, the mandatory date for completion of IPC Essentials will be extended from February 1, 2017 to May 1, 2017.

If you have questions or concerns related to language translations, please create a help desk ticket or email ipcedge@ipc.org

Thank you for your continued support in providing the highest level of training and certification to the electronics industry.

Certification Portal

Downloads:
Certificates and Online Print Tests can now be downloaded and will no longer be emailed. You have the option to download the test and certificates on a student by student basis or for the whole class at once.  Please note, the download button only appears within the start and end dates of the exam. If you do not see the button, you can edit the class date to make the button visible.

Student Enrollment:
If a student does not show up to a class, instructors should not have someone else take the test in that student's name. The student should be deleted and the new student should be enrolled. Failure to follow this process will result in additional cost.

Tips!
Trainers – Don't forget to check the expiration date of the student's previous certificate when conducting a recertification. If the student is recertifying within 90 days before or 90 days after the last expiration date, the new certificate expires 24 months from the original certificate expiration date.

Lost certificate -. If you need a new, printed copy of your lost certificate, please contact the CIT or MIT who conducted your class. Your instructor should be able to retrieve an e-copy of the certificate.

As the instructor, you will need to replace the existing slides with the slides provided in the link below. To assist you with this, each link also includes a “How to” PowerPoint. Please be sure to follow these instruction carefully. It is important to note that the process for CIT courses is different from CIS courses.

The exam questions affected by the amendment have been modified so that they do not conflict with either the base document or the amended training

Instructors will only receive the certificates via email once the class has been completed. We will begin removing the certificates from the online exam one week from this notification date.

When adding new student, please note that their name will be printed on their certificate exactly as it is typed. Please use proper case when entering your student's information.

Translations

IPC has made a number of exams available for online testing in different languages. In some cases, we have the translated exam, but do not have translated training material available. The list below contains current exams available for online testing that will not have translated materials available. This means your student can test in the language that they are comfortable, but you as the instructor will not have training materials in that same language.

CQI Q&A Sessions and Demos

The last full demo of the Certification portal was offered on Wednesday, February 24th. Full demos will not be offered live by IPC after this date. Demos of the portal will be posted under the Help tab for anyone who is interested.

The question and answer sessions will be reduced to once a week. These will be offered every Tuesday. Interested parties can use the call information at the bottom of this email to join the call.

New students

IPC has noticed an increase in duplicate records in our database. It is the trainer's responsibility to check to see if the student already exists in the IPC database before adding them as a new student or having them create a new profile.

You have two options to see if a student exists on the Add Student page:

  1. Look the student up by last name first name
    1. If you see the student's record, click on their name to add them to your class
      1. If changes are needed to the student's record, you can note the needed changes in the "Student Comment Box: or create a help desk ticket
  2. Look the student up by email
    1. The ability to lookup a student by email is a feature that was added to the portal in December. It is located at the bottom of the Add Student page.

IPC Certifications Counts by company

IPC Certification counts by company is offered on IPC's main site. This look up provides the ability to see how many certified employees a company has by program. New records added to the Certification portal will not display until their record has been added to the company by an IPC staff member. Due to the large volume of records, this may take several months to display. We are currently working on the back log and have a process in place to decrease the amount of time it takes to display these records going forward.

Have a question? We want CQI to meet all of your needs. In order to achieve this, IPC has regularly scheduled Q & A sessions. These sessions take place every Tuesdays at 10:00 am Central Time. IPC staff will answer any question about CQI, and if required, guide you through the use of the Certification Portal. The information below is for the Q & A sessions.
